At the Dove-Shell Federation, we believe that learning another language opens doors to global cultures, diverse perspectives, and lifelong opportunities. Our aim is to ignite a passion for language learning in every child – nurturing curiosity, confidence, and cultural awareness. We strive to equip our pupils with the skills and enthusiasm to continue their language journey confidently as they move on to secondary education and beyond.
Key Stage Two
Spanish is taught for a minimum of half an hour per week using the BCC Languages scheme, which gives children opportunity to hear native speakers delivering words, phrases and sentences to encourage correct pronunciation. Our starting point for the planning and implementation of this scheme is the National Curriculum Languages Programme of Study (PoS) document. This sets out our statutory requirement to provide language learning for all pupils across Key Stage 2.
Each unit has an overview document, setting out the learning outcomes, skills, grammar and structures, phonic focus, intercultural understanding, core language and assessment
activities. Links are also made to other curriculum areas. The Units are sequenced to enable progress in pupils’ language skills and linguistic knowledge.
There are also detailed lesson plans for teachers to follow, ensuring all children receive high quality language learning. Each lesson incorporates Physical Spanish Phonics, a sound, action and spelling system for teaching Spanish phonics. The language learning is based within the context of the culture of the Spanish-speaking World. The development of intercultural understanding is a key element of the lessons.
For each year group, the twelve KS2 Programme of Study objectives are interwoven and delivered through our success criteria statements so that pupils can make progress, year on year. The statements to be covered are listed in each unit and lesson plan and are the basis of our ongoing assessments.
EYFS and Key Stage One
Where language learning is non-statutory, Reception and Key Stage One have access to songs and stories in Spanish, as well as incidental opportunities for language learning such as greetings, colours and counting.
