Geography
At The Dove Shell Foundation, we aim to help develop children’s curiosity in both their immediate surroundings and in places and environments in the wider world. Our purpose is to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding children need to make sense of their world and to thrive within it as well rounded citizens. Children will be given opportunities to use a range of geographical skills to help them understand, present, analyse and communicate a range of information either collaboratively or as an individual. These skills are put into practice both inside and outside the classroom.
Our Geography curriculum is blocked into themed units of work. Over each two-year cycle children learn about three history based topic areas. Links between History and Geography are made where relevant. The curriculum time allocated for geography is equivalent an hour per week.
Our Key Stage 1 and 2 curriculum builds upon the knowledge and skills that children develop in the EYFS through the area of understanding the world.
History
In our rich and broad primary curriculum, studying history helps children to understand their place in the world, making sense of how people and places have changed over time. At the Dove-Shell Federation, our children will get to know a diverse range of important figures and events that have shaped the world they live in. Through exploring artefacts and hands-on experiences, they can work as historians and understand how evidence builds a picture of the past. By linking learning within and across year groups, we strive for children to be equipped with a mental timeline of the past. We aim to build all pupils’ knowledge of key concepts using appropriately challenging vocabulary, offering opportunities to revisit concepts to build a solid foundation for their chronological understanding.
