Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

PSHE enables pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.

There are two strands to this at primary level – Relationships Education and Physical Health and Mental Well-Being.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have learnt about:

In Relationships Education

  • families and people who care for us
  • caring friendships
  • respectful relationships
  • online relationships
  • being safe

For Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing

  • mental wellbeing
  • internet safety and harms
  • physical health and fitness
  • healthy eating
  • facts and risks associated with drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • health and prevention
  • basic first aid
  • changing adolescent body

At the Dove-Shell Federation, PHSE is taught through the vehicle of Philosophy for Children (P4C). In the EYFS, the most relevant statements for PSHE are taken from the following areas of learning: Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Understanding the World. Children undertake a weekly focused carpet sessions and continuous provision.

At Key Stage 1, children have a 45 minute lesson each week. At Key Stage 2 this is a weekly 1 hour lesson. In addition to PHSE, children are supported to develop a thorough understanding of mental, health and well-being through accessing My Happy Mind weekly and circle time as when needed.
