Art and Design & Design and Technology

Art and Design

At the Dove-Shell Federation, we aim to teach the skills to be an artist through appreciation of the work of a range of different artists from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. We will provide the opportunity to look at art first-hand in the local and broader community. Children will experience working with all types of artistic medium in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles. The progression through the primary years will culminate in our pupils being able to draw on their knowledge of different artists and their styles; and skills learnt through different media to develop their own personal style and appreciation in the artistic world.

Art & Design will be blocked to be taught three times a year with a time allocation equivalent to 14 hours as teachers will use 1 full day working alongside our artist in residence and the remaining afternoons of the same week to complete the planned art and design project.

The skills of Art & Design have been planned and linked from the EYFS to Year 6 to ensure that these build on what our children have experienced.

Design and Technology

Design and Technology (D&T) is a vital part of our curriculum as it helps to prepare children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Children will be able to exercise their creativity through designing, making, evaluating and exploring technical knowledge. Learning about a range of diverse engineers, designers, chefs and architects will inspire children to have a thirst for learning by people who stimulate the of design for the 21st century. By creating a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real-life purpose, children will be inspired to use these life skills within their future and the wider world.

D&T will be blocked to be taught three times a year with a time allocation equivalent to 14 hours as teachers will use 1 full day and the remaining afternoons where necessary to ensure that time is given to the design and make element of each project.

The skills of DT have been planned and linked from the EYFS to Year 6 to ensure that these build on what our children have experienced.
